friction burn

Skin scrape wound

A friction burn is skin damage caused by rubbing against a surface—the heat and abrasion together irritating or removing skin.

Rope burns and rug burns are common examples.

The term also applies to similar injuries from skin-on-skin contact during vigorous activity: She had friction burns on her knees from the carpet.
