no man's land

Between opposing trenches

No man's land is territory that belongs to no one or lies between opposing forces.

The term became iconic during World War I for the deadly ground between trenches, swept by machine gun fire and artillery.

It now describes any contested, unclaimed, or ambiguous zone: The proposal fell into a bureaucratic no man's land.

Also used for areas too dangerous or desolate to inhabit.
