savant

Person of brilliance

A savant is a person of profound learning or exceptional skill in a specialized field.

The term often appears in idiot savant, now usually savant syndrome, describing someone with developmental disabilities who demonstrates extraordinary ability in a narrow domain—calculating calendar dates instantly, playing complex music by ear, or drawing cityscapes from memory.

Outside clinical contexts, savant suggests deep expertise: a wine savant, a political savant.
