goldbrick

Dodge your duties

A goldbrick is someone who shirks work or duty while appearing busy—originally military slang for a soldier who avoids tasks.

The verb means to loaf or malinger: He goldbricked his way through the afternoon.

The term comes from the old con of selling gold-plated lead bricks as solid gold—something that looks valuable but isn't.
