wonk
Detail-fixated expert
A wonk is someone who studies a subject with intense, detail-oriented focus—especially policy or technical matters.
The term often appears with a modifier: a policy wonk, a budget wonk, a health-care wonk.
It can be mildly dismissive, suggesting someone more interested in arcane details than practical results, but many wonks embrace the label proudly.
To wonk out is to dive deep into technical specifics.
