A neckbeard is facial hair growing on the neck while the cheeks and chin remain bare or patchy—the inverse of a well-groomed beard.
The term became slang for a socially awkward man, stereotypically obsessed with gaming, anime, or internet culture, living in a basement, and neglecting personal hygiene: Total neckbeard energy.
The physical trait and the stereotype reinforce each other.
