nationalize

Government assumes ownership

To nationalize is to transfer ownership or control of an industry, company, or resource from private hands to the government: The government nationalized the oil fields.

Countries nationalize for various reasons—economic crisis, ideological commitment, or strategic control of key industries.

The opposite is privatize.

In a separate sense, to nationalize is to make something national in character or scope, or to grant citizenship to a foreigner, though naturalize is more common for this last meaning.
