expropriate
Claim by authority
To expropriate is to take property from its owner, typically by government authority.
The state may expropriate land for public projects like highways or utilities, usually with compensation.
The word carries overtones of coercion—even when legal, expropriation suggests the owner had no choice: The regime expropriated foreign-owned factories.
More loosely, to expropriate is to take something that belongs to another: He expropriated her ideas for his own paper.
