file format

Data encoding standard

A file format is the structure and encoding scheme that determines how data is stored in a computer file.

Different formats serve different purposes: JPEG and PNG for images, MP3 for audio, PDF for documents.

Programs must recognize a file's format to interpret its contents correctly.

Format is typically indicated by the filename extension: The video was in .mov format, so I needed QuickTime to play it.
