file type
Document format designation
A file type is a classification indicating a file's format and how it should be interpreted—whether as text, image, audio, executable code, or other data.
File types are typically identified by extensions: .txt for plain text, .jpg for images, .mp3 for audio.
Operating systems use file types to determine which application opens a file: My computer doesn't recognize this file type.
