naiads

Freshwater mythological guardians

Naiads are freshwater nymphs in Greek mythology—spirits inhabiting rivers, springs, streams, and fountains.

Each naiad was bound to her particular body of water and could sicken or die if it dried up.

The word extends to aquatic plants and insects: naiad is a genus of submerged freshwater plants, and the aquatic larval stage of dragonflies and similar insects.

The pond was thick with naiads and water lilies.
