tritons

Sea snails, basically

Tritons are large sea snails with spiral shells, or the shells themselves, which can be blown like horns.

In Greek mythology, Triton was a merman deity who calmed or roused the seas by blowing a conch shell—giving the mollusks their name.

A triton is also a type of aquatic salamander, typically called a newt in everyday speech.
