Atalanta
Outrun or die
Atalanta is a figure from Greek mythology—a huntress and athlete who could outrun any man.
Her father, wanting a son, abandoned her at birth; she was raised by a bear and later by hunters.
Suitors who wished to marry her had to beat her in a footrace or die.
Hippomenes (or Melanion) won by dropping golden apples given to him by Aphrodite, which Atalanta stopped to collect.
The name appears in various athletic and sporting contexts: Atalanta is an Italian football club based in Bergamo.
