nereids

Ocean's mythic daughters

Nereids are sea nymphs in Greek mythology, the fifty daughters of the sea god Nereus.

They attended Poseidon and were associated with calm seas and the safety of sailors.

The word appears in fantasy literature and poetry evoking ocean imagery: The nereids rose from the waves to guide the ship.

In astronomy, Nereid is also a moon of Neptune. (Capitalized Nereids emphasizes the mythological figures.)
