multicore

Several processors together

Multicore describes processors containing multiple independent processing units on a single chip: a multicore CPU, multicore architecture.

Each core can execute instructions simultaneously, improving performance for tasks that can be divided into parallel operations.

The term emerged in the early 2000s as manufacturers shifted from increasing clock speed to adding cores: dual-core, quad-core, octa-core.
