time slice
CPU scheduling unit
A time slice is a brief interval during which a computer's processor gives attention to one task before switching to another.
Operating systems divide processing time into these slices to create the illusion that multiple programs run simultaneously: Each process gets a time slice of a few milliseconds.
The concept extends to any allocation of limited time among competing demands.
