mudpot

Bubbling volcanic pool

A mudpot is a hot spring where geothermal activity heats groundwater that mixes with volcanic clay and mud, creating a bubbling, viscous pool.

Found in volcanic regions like Yellowstone, mudpots gurgle and splatter as gases escape through the thick surface: The trail passed several steaming mudpots.

Also called a mud volcano when the material builds into a cone.
