field research
Study in situ
Field research is investigation conducted outside the laboratory or library, gathering data directly from real-world settings.
Anthropologists do field research by living among the people they study; biologists do it by observing animals in natural habitats.
The term contrasts with desk research or controlled experiments: Her field research took her to rural villages across Southeast Asia.
