mudlark

Thames treasure hunter

A mudlark is someone who scavenges in river mud for items of value, particularly along the Thames in London.

Historically, mudlarks were among the poorest members of Victorian society, often children, who picked through tidal mud for coal, rope, metal, or anything sellable.

Today the term describes hobbyists who search riverbanks for historical artifacts, coins, and curiosities, typically with permits.

The mudlark found a Roman coin embedded in the clay.
