bobby
London beat walker
A bobby is a British police officer, a term deriving from Sir Robert Peel, who established London's Metropolitan Police in 1829.
The word is informal but not disrespectful: The bobby on the corner gave us directions.
Though still understood, it sounds increasingly old-fashioned in contemporary British speech. (Capitalized Bobby is a given name.)
