mudlarks

Thames treasure hunters

Mudlarks are people who scavenge in river mud for objects of value.

The term originated with those who searched the Thames at low tide for coins, metal, and anything sellable.

Today it often describes hobbyists who hunt for historical artifacts: Mudlarks sometimes find Roman coins and Victorian clay pipes.

The verb mudlark means to engage in this activity.
