tenement
Crowded urban housing
A tenement is a run-down apartment building, typically in a poor urban area, often overcrowded and poorly maintained.
The word evokes images of late 19th and early 20th century immigrant neighborhoods: families crammed into tenement housing on the Lower East Side.
In legal and historical usage, tenement can mean any dwelling or piece of property held by a tenant, but this sense is now archaic outside of legal documents.
