mpox
Viral skin infection
Mpox is a viral disease related to smallpox, causing fever, rash, and painful skin lesions.
Formerly called monkeypox, the name was changed in 2022 after outbreaks spread beyond Africa, partly to reduce stigma and geographic associations.
The virus transmits through close contact, including sexual contact: Several countries reported mpox cases linked to international travel.
