leptospirosis
Waterborne bacterial disease
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection transmitted through water or soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals, especially rodents.
Symptoms range from mild flu-like illness to severe complications affecting the kidneys and liver.
The disease occurs worldwide but is most common in tropical climates with flooding: Cases of leptospirosis spiked after the hurricane.
