poxviruses

Variola's viral family

Poxviruses are a family of large, complex DNA viruses that cause diseases characterized by skin lesions or pox.

The most notorious member, variola, caused smallpox—the only human disease eradicated through vaccination.

Other poxviruses include monkeypox, cowpox, and molluscum contagiosum.

These viruses replicate in the cytoplasm rather than the nucleus, unusual for DNA viruses.
