moors

Heather-covered wastelands

Moors are broad stretches of open, uncultivated upland, typically covered with heather, coarse grasses, and boggy ground.

The term is especially associated with the British Isles: the Yorkshire moors, Wuthering Heights is set on the moors.

Moorland tends to be windswept, treeless, and somewhat desolate—atmospheric territory for Gothic novels and long walks.

To moor a boat is a different word, meaning to secure it in place. (Capitalized Moors refers to the Muslim peoples of North Africa.)
