gorse

Prickly heath plant

Gorse is a thorny evergreen shrub with bright yellow flowers, common on heaths and moors in Britain and western Europe.

Its dense, spiny growth makes it nearly impenetrable: The hillside was covered in gorse.

The plant blooms almost year-round, giving rise to the saying "When gorse is out of bloom, kissing's out of fashion."
