casts off

Releases the mooring

Casts off means to release, discard, or let go of something no longer wanted or needed.

A ship casts off when it releases its mooring lines to depart from a dock.

In knitting, to cast off is to finish a piece by securing the final row of stitches so they won't unravel.

More figuratively, someone casts off old habits, relationships, or constraints when they free themselves from them: She finally cast off the expectations her family had imposed on her.
