wuthering
Stormy, howling winds
Wuthering describes a fierce, blustering wind or the roaring sound it makes.
The word is dialectal, from northern England, and owes its wider recognition almost entirely to Emily Brontë's novel *Wuthering Heights*, where it names a windswept farmhouse on the Yorkshire moors: The wuthering gale rattled the shutters all night.
