pockmarks

Small pitted scars

Pockmarks are small pits or scars on a surface, especially the skin.

The term originally described the scarring left by smallpox or severe acne—round, shallow depressions that remain after healing.

The meaning extends to any surface with similar indentations: The moon's face is covered with pockmarks from ancient impacts.

As a verb, to pockmark is to leave such marks: Artillery had pockmarked the building's facade.
