microhistory

Small-scale historical study

Microhistory is a historical approach that examines a small, specific subject—a single person, event, community, or moment—to illuminate larger patterns and structures.

Rather than sweeping narratives of nations or centuries, microhistory zooms in: a microhistory of a 16th-century Italian miller, a microhistory of one slave ship's voyage.

The method reveals how ordinary people experienced historical forces.
