surfactant

Surface tension breaker

A surfactant is a substance that reduces surface tension between liquids, or between a liquid and a solid.

Soaps and detergents are surfactants—they help water penetrate fabrics and lift away grease.

The term comes from "surface-active agent." Surfactants appear in cleaning products, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and industrial processes: The shampoo contains mild surfactants that won't strip natural oils.
