megasporocyte

Diploid plant cell

A megasporocyte is a cell in seed plants that undergoes meiosis to produce megaspores, which develop into the female gametophyte.

Also called a megaspore mother cell, it's the botanical equivalent of an egg precursor cell: The megasporocyte divides to form four megaspores, though typically only one survives.
