manic depressives
Bipolar disorder sufferers
Manic depressives are people who have manic depression, the condition now usually called bipolar disorder.
The term was standard medical vocabulary through much of the twentieth century but has fallen out of favor as clinical language shifted.
Someone might still describe themselves this way: As a manic depressive, I know the highs don't last.
