electroconvulsive therapy
Brain seizure induction
Electroconvulsive therapy is a psychiatric treatment in which electric current is passed through the brain to induce a brief seizure.
Used primarily for severe depression that hasn't responded to medication, it's performed under general anesthesia.
Despite its grim portrayal in popular culture, modern ECT is considered safe and often effective.
Also called shock therapy or ECT.
