melancholia

Deep, persistent sadness

Melancholia is a deep, lingering sadness—heavier and more persistent than ordinary melancholy.

The word has a clinical history, once naming what we now call depression: She fell into a melancholia that lasted months.

In contemporary use, it often describes artistic or romantic gloom, a brooding state tinged with dark beauty rather than mere unhappiness.
