mainshaft

Primary rotating rod

A mainshaft is the principal rotating shaft in a machine, especially in a gearbox or transmission.

In automotive contexts, it's the shaft that carries the gears and transmits power from the engine to the drivetrain: The mainshaft bearing needs replacement.

Industrial machinery and mining equipment also have mainshafts as central components.
