bellhousing

Transmission mounting shell

A bellhousing is the bell-shaped metal casing that connects an engine to a transmission, enclosing the flywheel and clutch assembly.

The flared shape accommodates these rotating components while providing mounting points for both units: The mechanic had to remove the bellhousing to replace the clutch.
