jackshaft

Power transmission intermediary

A jackshaft is an intermediate shaft in a mechanical system that transmits power between a primary drive shaft and the final driven component.

Common in engines, conveyors, and industrial machinery, it allows for speed changes, direction changes, or repositioning of the power source: The belt runs from the motor to a jackshaft, then to the main pulley.
