horseless carriage
Victorian motor vehicle
Horseless carriage is an old-fashioned term for an automobile, used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries when cars were new and understood primarily as carriages that moved without horses.
The term now appears only in historical contexts or for humorous effect: My grandfather still calls it a horseless carriage.
