lever action

Repeating firearm operation

Lever action is a firearm mechanism where a lever, typically doubling as the trigger guard, is pulled down and forward to eject a spent cartridge and chamber a new round.

The design dominated American rifles in the late 19th century—the Winchester being iconic—and remains popular for hunting and sport shooting: a lever-action rifle, lever-action shotgun.
