stakeout

Police surveillance mission

A stakeout is a period of covert surveillance, typically by police watching a location for criminal activity: We've had a stakeout on the warehouse for three days.

The term comes from the idea of staking out territory—claiming a position and holding it.

By extension, any patient waiting and watching: Her stakeout of the sale rack finally paid off.
