inspector
Official safety checker
An inspector is someone who examines things officially to ensure they meet standards or regulations: a building inspector, a health inspector, a school inspector.
In police forces, inspector is a rank—in Britain, a mid-level officer; in the U.S., typically higher.
The inspector found three code violations.
Inspector also appears in fiction as a title for detectives: Inspector Clouseau, Inspector Gadget.
