breathalyzer
Roadside sobriety test
A breathalyzer is a device that measures blood alcohol content from a breath sample.
Police use breathalyzers during traffic stops to determine if drivers are legally intoxicated: He failed the breathalyzer and was arrested for DUI.
The word comes from breath plus analyzer, originally a trademark now used generically.
