lapis lazuli

Deep blue stone

Lapis lazuli is a deep blue semiprecious stone, prized since antiquity for jewelry and ornamental objects.

Ground into powder, it produced ultramarine—the most expensive pigment in medieval and Renaissance painting, reserved for the Virgin Mary's robes and other precious details.

The name combines Latin *lapis* (stone) with Persian *lazuli* (blue).

Often shortened to lapis: a lapis pendant.
