ultramarine

Vivid blue pigment

Ultramarine is a vivid blue pigment, originally made by grinding the semiprecious stone lapis lazuli.

The name refers to the pigment's origin "beyond the sea"—lapis lazuli came to Europe from Afghanistan.

As an adjective, ultramarine describes this particular shade of deep, brilliant blue: an ultramarine sky, ultramarine tiles.
