lazuli

Vivid blue stone

Lazuli appears almost exclusively in the phrase lapis lazuli, a deep blue semiprecious stone prized since antiquity for jewelry and pigment.

The word comes from a Persian term for blue.

On its own, lazuli sometimes describes the intense blue color of the stone: lazuli skies, lazuli waters.
