nucleosome
Chromatin's basic unit
A nucleosome is the fundamental unit of DNA packaging in eukaryotic cells, consisting of a segment of DNA wound around a core of eight histone proteins.
These bead-like structures allow the long strands of DNA to be compacted enough to fit inside a cell's nucleus while still permitting access for gene expression and replication.
The string of nucleosomes, sometimes called "beads on a string," represents the first level of chromatin organization.
