codon

Three-base sequence

A codon is a sequence of three nucleotides in DNA or RNA that codes for a specific amino acid during protein synthesis.

The genetic code consists of 64 codons, each representing one of twenty amino acids or a signal to stop translation.

The stop codon terminates the protein chain.

Understanding codons is fundamental to molecular biology and genetic engineering.
