hypotonic

Lower solute concentration

Hypotonic describes a solution with lower concentration of dissolved substances than another solution, typically a cell's interior.

When cells are placed in hypotonic fluid, water moves into them by osmosis, causing them to swell: Red blood cells burst in hypotonic solutions.

The term appears in biology and medicine, contrasting with hypertonic (higher concentration) and isotonic (equal concentration).
